What is Breast Eczema?
Breast eczema refers to an inflammatory skin reaction occurring in the breast area, including the areola and nipple regions. Similar to eczema elsewhere on the body, it presents with redness, itching, rashes or crusting. However, breast eczema is unique in that if it persists asymmetrically and develops abnormal symptoms, it may indicate a rare form of breast skin cancer called Paget’s disease.
How to Identify Paget’s Disease?
Paget’s disease is a rare but malignant form of breast cancer involving the skin. Symptoms include:
Chronic, unhealing eczema on one breast only Nipple inversion or enlargement/deformity of the areola Abnormal discharge or ulceration of the nipple/areola No detectable lump on mammogram or ultrasound If unilateral breast eczema exhibits any of these signs, prompt medical evaluation is needed to rule out Paget’s disease.
Who is at Risk for Breast Eczema?
The following groups are more prone to developing breast eczema:
Postpartum or breastfeeding women Those with atopic dermatitis/eczema Wearers of silicone, non-breathable bras Exposure to irritating substances on breasts Postpartum hormonal changes, infant suckling, and lowered immunity increase the risk for breastfeeding mothers. Those with eczema-prone skin or who wear tight, non-breathable bras are also more susceptible. Contact with irritants on the breasts can also trigger eczema flares.
How is Breast Eczema Treated?
Temporarily stop breastfeeding to avoid further irritation Use topical corticosteroid ointments Keep breasts clean to prevent infection Seek further evaluation if symptoms worsen or become abnormal Most cases of breast eczema resolve with proper treatment, but breastfeeding mothers must discontinue and monitor carefully. Any suspicious signs warrant prompt medical attention.
Daily Care for Breast Eczema
Avoid irritating cleansers on breasts Use lukewarm water to gently cleanse Apply moisturizers to keep skin hydrated Minimize unnecessary friction or irritation Seek professional medical help early if you have any concerns about breast eczema.
